What is an ABN?
An Australian Business Number (ABN) is a unique 11-digit number that identifies your business to the government, other businesses and the public. It is issued by the Australian Business Register (ABR) and is used on invoices, when registering for GST, and when dealing with the ATO.
What is an ACN?
An Australian Company Number (ACN) is a 9-digit number issued by ASIC to every registered company. Companies have both an ACN and an ABN — in most cases the ABN is simply the ACN with two check digits added to the front.
How do I find my ABN?
- Sole trader? Search your own full name in the box above.
- Company, partnership or trust? Search your registered business or trading name.

Why do I need my ABN?
You need your ABN to invoice clients (without one, other businesses may be required to withhold 47% of payments), to register for GST, to claim fuel tax credits and energy grants, and to get an Australian domain name such as a .com.au address.
